Is it because I'm not a macophile that I just don't see the attraction here?

Well, I expect that mac users have higher expectations for iPhone than you do.

It replaces three devices in my pocket with one that's smaller than any of them, it does things that none of the three did at all, I can program for it myself if I want different functionality, and it's good and intuitive at what it does.

I don't need a phone, video iPod, and Palm Pilot in my pocket. I'd stopped carrying the Palm long ago.

I can use google maps from anywhere and get directions on the fly. I can administer my mail server.

That said, it's not life-changing. Just life-simplifying and improving. If you don't need what I need, it may not be right for you.

Having seen folk walking down the street (near campus) essentially marketing the device to strangers, I'm sure it will be a commercial success... barring $catastrophe.

Well, they charge about $500-$600 per and cost of materials estimates are roughly $220 per, so call it $250 per and 750,000 sold the first weekend, plus accessories $200M.

AT&T got contracts worth $1.08B over two years.

If they shut down today, it's a commercial success.
