So, Freeverse has a bridge program. It's sorta dumb in solo mode, but you can play with live opponents. I tried it tonight. It was fun, especially when we did well.

Highlights:

  • Set the opposition by 4 in the first game of the second rubber in a cross-ruff fest of epic proportions. Gratifying because they were set before they won a trick. Not their fault, but I had four hcp.

  • Won both rubbers.

Lowlights:

  • Overanalyzed partner's opening 4NT bid and missed slam chance.

  • Partner and RHO got cranky over my missing that.

  • Didn't figure out what partner's 4D over 2NT meant. Turns out it meant "let's play in 4D." I bid 4H, he went to 5D, we went down 1

Overall impression: fun! But would be better with people I knew and wanted to play with. Also, I'm rusty as hell, but a good defender.

It amuses the hell out of me that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to understand this sentence. :)

My stepmother plays bridge. I did once during finals week at Rice. But I never really picked up on it. Maybe someday...

Although I am familiar with some simpler win-the-trick games (Dragon's Ante, that card game I bought at Dawn's store, has elements of this), I have never learned bridge...
