NKL Finals!

As
immlass mentioned in her report, the important thing to mention here is "and everyone is OK." Now that that's clear, we'll continue in order.
For those who don't know, Ginger has been competing in the National Karaoke League's South Austin Division this spring. NKL is just getting started, but they certainly have a fun idea and I hope it takes off. It's nice to get some structure and lots of positive feedback around karaoke. It's also been something Ginger has enjoyed a great deal.
It was a good thing that my office likes to close at 3PM the day before company holidays, because we needed time to get Ginger into her costume and warpaint. We usually get there way early, and this time we were only significantly early.
Ego's was sorta slow filling up; people weren't on time except for the two competitors, but eventually almost everyone from the league was there. That was good, it was nice to see everyone who didn't make the finals support the league. There were free drinks and chips and queso, one of which helps karaoke and the other of which does not.
This was the finals, so it was four rounds of two competitors instead of three rounds of five, so it went pretty quickly. Ginger was first, and we were both so nervous that I can't even remember what her competitor sang. She killed 'em with Adam Ant's Stand and Deliver!, and won her round, although we didn't know that until the end. It was really close. The photo link below has, as you might imagine, lots of pictures of her singing.
Ginger's part was done and so we got to enjoy and cheer her partners on for the rest of the night. Next up was Karaoke Roulette. Green got Ratt's Round and Round, and the poor girl seriously didn't know the timing on it. Such is life. Adam got Tainted Love, which he didn't know perfectly, but had a lot of fun with. Green took that round.
Next was Summer, substituting for Heather who came down with Bronchitis. She had a leather corset and leather pants and sang a Danzig song (don't recall which one) and drew on her forehead with fake blood and sacrificed stuffed animals while singing. It was hilarious! She also had the foresight to use a bit of electrical tape in case of wardrobe malfunction. Another one-vote win for team "Bringing the WTF".
The last song was
hangingfire, on crutches from her Vespa accident last week, and Sara, in a jumpsuit and pornstache as Freddy Mercury singing Under Pressure, while Adam as Vanilla Ice tried to jump in. It was fun and I recorded the video (so no still pics). Sadly, Lauren and the Greens brought out Don't Stop Believing and won the round.
So two rounds to two, and they won on points. They made 'em fight hard for it, though.
The Green team graciously invited Blue up for the victory song, and that's when Karin's crutches slipped and she fell. It was scary for a while and EMTs were summoned, but she was conscious and aware and everyone was relieved when she waved as they were wheeling her out for the ride back to Brackenridge Hospital. Luckily, she didn't re-break her patella and while she has to go back in to have them close up the wound again, she didn't have an overnight stay.
We're hoping for continued good news from Karin.
So accidents and injuries made it a tough night for Team Bringing the WTF, but given that their goal was to do the most ridiculous, fun songs they could, they did an amazing job this season and the fact that they were even finalists meant that they were already winners. So was the League. So were all the fans who went to see the fun.
Oh, and my pictures are on Flikr...
