There's a primer on how to adopt to unexpectedly living in the South. One is told, amongst other items of note, that one should "save your bacon drippings in a can in the fridge." Reassuringly, "you'll be told why later."

As a Southerner by birth, heritage, and inclination, I can yell you plainly that "the white art" is not the reason.

My mother from Vermont did that when I was a kid, too.
