Dr. Pepper and Math...
May. 31st, 2008 11:56 amDon't get me wrong. I like Dr. Pepper and I drink a lot of Diet Dr. Pepper.
I'm just boggled by their promotions department.
The Indiana Jones promo is your standard "there's a code on the bottle/box, enter it on the web and we'll tell you if you won." (more or less. Some cans have iPods inside them).
Every bit of the materials for this says "1 in 6 wins!" What they don't say is that over 90% of those 1 in 6 aren't winning anything that has any value or that costs the company any appreciable amount.
Of the 49 million prizes, 45 million are screensavers or desktop wallpaper. Just like the ones the Dr Pepper company gives away for free. Just like the ones the Indiana Jones website gives away for free. Except combining the two products. Another 1.5 million are dollar menu prizes from BK. Whee.
They list the ARV of these prizes as $0.99. I'd like to see them get $22,352,022.00 for desktop wallpaper. Even if they sell it for $0.09, that's significantly overvalued. Wallpaper? If it took a week of a $40K art director's time, he's padding...
I'd like to win, but it would be nice if they told you "1 in 74 wins something which costs us more than a penny which you might value at that or more."
